What Does Your Timepiece Need?

If your watch or clock is running and it’s been a few years since it was last serviced, it’s probably time to have a horologist work on it. That means cleaning out the old oil and dirt that builds up over time, putting in new oil, and potentially replacing commonly worn out parts: mainsprings, bushings, and the crystal. If you keep your timepiece serviced regularly, this is likely all you’ll need to do for its entire lifetime.

If your watch or clock isn’t running, or it’s been 10, 20, or “I don’t remember how many” years since it’s seen a service, it will probably require additional work to bring back to life. That means everything involved in a routine service, but also repairing or replacing broken parts, and addressing a lot more wear spots.

My location is in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I can work on watches, small clocks, and other smaller pieces sent by mail, but it’s safest to exchange pieces in person. Call or email to schedule a consultation.

Basic Mechanical Service

$250. Includes full disassembly, inspection, cleaning, and timing of a time-only mechanical watch or a two-train mechanical clock. I won’t let a timepiece go unless I can be confident it’s running well, so I clean every watch or clock I work on.

Repair and Restoration

$100 diagnosis fee; goes toward overall repair cost. If your timepiece is not working, things can be more complicated. I begin by diagnosing what’s going wrong. This means a full disassembly to get a full picture. I’ll then contact you with what I’ve found and what it will take to fix, and we’ll discuss whether you want to move forward with the repair. If we decide to go ahead, I’ll complete the repair, then give the piece a full service. Otherwise, I put everything back the way I found it and return it to you. The diagnosis cost will go towards the final repair cost.

Complications

$50 additional/complication for basic service for watches with additional complications like day/date, automatic winding, and chronograph. $100 additional for basic service for three-train clocks.

Batteries Etc.

$15/battery, link removal, or band change. One day turnaround. Currently I cannot guarantee water-resistance rating.

Replacement Parts

It is usually most cost-effective for me to source authentic replacement parts, and the cost of these depends on their availability. However, for unusual jobs, I can make just about any replacement part a timepiece might need. This work is charged hourly.
